If you are interested, even a little, with the pictures, do not buy the paperback as they are a very very pale copy of the ones I have seen online..... Don't know if the pictures are any better in the reproduced hardback book but I have downloaded pictures on the web from the original book which blow these pics in the soft cover book out of the water. The old photos of the houses are "ok" but the portraits are so faint...why bother putting them in the edition? I can't figure it out. I was going to get more copies of the book for relatives...not now.
If you had ancestors from Grayson County, you simply must get this book. It has photos, genealogy, and fascinating stories and tidbits beyond just names and dates. It's amazing how many American patriots came out of Grayson County! Abe Lincoln's mother, congressmen and senators and governors; descendents of John Paul Jones settled in Grayson County(includes a story of his not so famous words in a heated battle to a swearing officer "Gentlemen, don't swear, in the next few minutes you may be in eternity"). Stories of patriots of the American Revolution,War of 1812 and the Civil War. Each family has a chapter dedicated to newspaper clippings, personal letters, stories of indian troubles (around the time of the french/indian war), and very thorough geneological information. Actually enjoyable reading! I'm a descendent of Lewis Hale and our family found this book most helpful! Cox, Bryan, Bourne, Nuckulls, Hales, Garland, Swift, Dickey, Osbourne, Phipps, Cornett Families included.

Really helped me with my ancestors in locating and helping with my family tree of the Hales, Bourne's and the Jones'
Some pages are duplicated. The information was valuable and interesting; however, the poor quality of the print made it difficult to read.
This is a great little book for genealogy research of Virginia and Kentucky ancestors. A must read for researchers, however...please note that there are few errors in the text, but great reading none the less.
