I have to be honest when I first saw this book listed, saw the title and cover and then noted the author was a journalist I dismissed this book as just another book by an outsider milking the tattoo gravy train. The book crept into a recent phone conversation I was having with one of my old school tattooist friends who recommended I give it a look. I was pleasantly surprised. I wouldn’t call it a sourcebook for old school designs but the text has been well researched and intelligently written. I enjoyed following the history of the tattoo designs from the circus carnival era through the two world wars arriving at where we are today. The book touches base on many of tattooing’s early greats. The book finishes up with a couple of interviews with tattooists Chuck Eldridge and Lyle Tuttle both respected tattoo historians within the tattoo business, had I have seen their names mentioned within the books synopsis I might have bought the book sooner. I wouldn’t buy the book as a tattoo flash sourcebook but for somebody that knows nothing of tattoo history and wants to learn it quickly in a one-stop guide this book is definitely for them.

This hardcover book is indeed the exact same book as the softcover "Vintage Tattoos The Book of Old-School Skin Art by Carol Clerk" but the sub-title for this First Edition hardcover is "a sourcebook for old-school designs and tattoo artists"
Both books read the same page per page BUT the ink used on the paperback is different than that of the hardcover. It seems that darker pigments were used in the softcover which causes darkening of some images which used heavy shading to begin with. This has caused some images to lose only the slightest of details.
All red areas on the cover and spine are foiled so that this book shines very nicely depending on how you look at it.
This hardcover book is still readily available, at an affordable price, for those that SEEK it out.
Differences are minimal. Good read either way.
